What is Anthropic Mythos & why is it in the News ?
VIDEO DESCRIPTION
This video explores Anthropic's groundbreaking Mythos model, the first frontier AI system in the ten-trillion parameter class with a training cost exceeding $10 billion. The presenter explains why Anthropic has made the unprecedented decision to restrict public access, citing the model's extraordinary capabilities that could potentially "break the internet" and pose serious cybersecurity risks. Hello, how you doing? Have you heard the term anthropic mythos? And you know it's a frontier model, but you're not quite sure you know why it's all over the news. Well, if so, then watch on with me for the next few minutes, and I'll quickly get you up to speed. Okay, let's get started. So, what is Enthropic Mythos? Well, Mythos is Enthropic's latest advanced frontier model designed to push the boundaries of large language models. Mythos is the first frontier model in the 10 trillion parameter class and reportedly is costing around $10 billion to train. Right now, it's making headlines because Enthropic has taken the unusual step of not releasing it to the public, saying the model is too powerful and could pose a serious risk to global cyber security. Because Anthropic believes releasing Methos publicly could break the internet, they limit access to a group of partners including Amazon, Google,
Microsoft, Apple, and Nvidia. Others, including the list, are shown here to my right. The goal is to use the model's powerful capabilities to find security weaknesses before bad actors do. By aggressively searching for vulnerabilities, it can help uncover hidden security bugs across critical systems like banking, power grids, and healthcare. Fixing these issues early makes our infrastructure safer before others develop similar advanced tools. Mythos is being called by some a zeroday engine. Anthropic researchers found that even engineers with no security experience could ask it to find a serious software vulnerability overnight and by morning it would deliver a working exploit. It even uncovered a 27-year-old security bug in OpenBSD that human engineers had missed for decades. Quick note, zero day here refers to the
security term zeroday defect. A zero-day defect is a security vulnerability that is unknown to the vendor or developers, leaving them with zero days to create a patch before it's exploited by attackers. So, what about this sandbox escape that people are talking about? Well, in a series of concerning safety tests, Mythos reportedly escaped its virtual sandbox. When researchers challenged it to prove it could break out, it succeeded and then unexpectedly emailed a researcher and posted details of the exploit online without being asked. So, how much better is Mythos and benchmark tests over frontier models? Well, Methos, specifically Claude Methos preview, marks a major leap forward in AI, especially when it comes to coding and complex reasoning. So, what are some Amthos capabilities that stand out? Well, in the area of coding mastery, it achieved a record-breaking 93.9%
on the WSC bench verified benchmark. This was a huge jump from 80.8% scored by Claude Opus 4.6 just a few months ago. As mentioned earlier, it also stands out in the area of finding zeroday defects. In internal tests, it automatically found thousands of serious vulnerabilities across major operating systems like Linux and OpenBSD as well as in web browsers. Additionally, in the area of exploit generation, unlike earlier models that could only find security bugs, Mythos can actually turn them into working exploits, successfully doing so about 72% of the time. So, what impact does Mythos appear to be having? Well, the recent Cloud Methos preview in early April 2026 has sparked what many analysts are calling the biggest shift in AI since GPT4. Its impact is being felt across
financial markets, cyber security architecture, and the ongoing debate over open-source versus closed source AI. Okay, so let me know what you think of Mythos. Do you think this is hype being generated by anthropic or do you think they're taking legitimate steps to minimize negative impact on society? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below. innovation with the cloud and machine learning AI, but don't forget to carve out some time to live in the real world. Go outside, go swimming, go hiking, go climbing, go surf, but get out and move your body. And if you do, let me know in the comments. I want to hear about this as well. And with that, have a great day. Thanks.
